The Feasts of Israel
Lessons 9 & 10
Brian Kelson

Lesson 9

This lesson we return to our survey of the Feasts given to Israel. If you would like the earlier lessons in this series please email. Since it has been some time since the last lesson this could be repetitive for some readers.

Here is the Feasts chart if you dont already have a copy:

http://www.bibleunderstanding.com/feasts.htm

The annual Feasts of Israel are outlined in Leviticus 23 which also includes the weekly Feast held every Saturday, called the Sabbath. The command regarding the Sabbath was not given to the Church which is His Body. Here is a plain Scriptural statement regarding the weekly Sabbath, see all of Ex.31:13-17.

Exo 31:16  Therefore the sons of Israel shall keep the Sabbath, to observe the Sabbath throughout their generations, for an everlasting covenant.

Exo 31:17  It is a sign between Me and the sons of Israel forever. For in six days Jehovah made the heavens and the earth, and on the seventh day He rested, and was refreshed.

The annual feasts were set into two groups, the first celebrated in the early months of Israels festive year approximating around our March through May, and the later group occurring around our September/October. The first group included Passover, Unleavened Bread and Weeks (Pentecost), and the final set of feasts was Trumpets, Atonement, and Tabernacles/Booths.

The first group of Feasts was Israels typical Exodus (the way out); the second group of Feasts is Israels typical Eisodus (the way in). Salvation is of two parts and it is sad that many Christians spend all their lives clinging to the cross without any knowledge of the inheritance promised today.

Trumpets is the Feast before us today, and it is Trumpets which heralds this final group of Feasts.

Israels national beginnings gave them and us some incredible pictures of their future greater deliverance by Jehovah their Saviour and Lord, Christ Jesus. Here is a very brief revision.

PASSOVER. Lev.23:5. Gen.12:1-14.

Israel was delivered from bondage; the firstborn sons of Egypt died and the gods of Egypt were judged. The blood was around the door outside while the Lamb was consumed inside.

UNLEAVENED BREAD. Lev. 23:6-8. Ex.12:15-20.

For seven days beginning the night they were delivered (Gen.12:14-17). Israel were set free and marched out of Egypt; separated to serve God and they had to separate sin from their lives. In the future Kingdom on the earth, sin will not be tolerated (Psalm 5:4-6 cp Acts 5). Note; there is a first fruit in this Feast which points to Christ in resurrection, Lev.23:10 and 1Cor.15:20, 23.

WEEKS PENTECOST. Lev.23:15-21. Ex.19 et al.

Approximately 50-60 days later Israel arrived at Mt Sinai where they experienced a typical Pentecost or Feast of Weeks. The Law was given on tables of stone, Israel entered into a covenant and supernatural gifts were given. We are yet to fully examine this event and we will return to Mount Sinai soon. The first fruit in this Feast is leavened bread and points to Israel and includes those supernatural gifts poured out in Acts 2, Lev.23:17.

THE GAP. Lev. 23:22. Numbers 13 and 14, also Deut.1:2, 21, 26, 27, and 32.

Israel failed at their test of faith. They were marched straight from Mt Sinai to the southern border of their land. Instead of believing they were afraid and were turned back into the wilderness. Trumpets could have happened 40 years earlier. Israel also failed in the Gospels and Acts period. Had they faith in the Lord as their Messiah the last trumpet of revelation would have sounded nearly 2000 years ago and Christ would have returned to restore the Kingdom to Israel. Rev.11:15, Acts 1:6.

TRUMPETS. Lev.23. Joshua 3-6.

Trumpets is the beginning of glory after suffering. The Lord brought Israel around to the east side of the Promised Land to enter across the river Jordan. There, Moses died and was buried by the Lord, see Deut. 34:1-6. Moses led Israel out but only the Lord Jesus Christ will lead them in and so Joshua comes to the fore.

Joshua was commanded to lead the people into their promised land;

Jos 1:2  My servant Moses is dead. Now, therefore, arise, go over this Jordan, you and all this people to the land which I give to them, to the sons of Israel.

Jos 1:3  Every place that the sole of your foot shall tread upon, I have given that to you, as I said to Moses.

Jos 1:4  From the wilderness and this Lebanon even to the great river, the river Euphrates, all the land of the Hittites, and to the Great Sea toward the going down of the sun, shall be your border.

Here is the first and very important point linked with the Feasts of Trumpets; the nation of Israel entered into their Kingdom. Joshua means saviour, deliverer and he is a type of Christ, the true Saviour and Deliverer of Israel. This looks forward to the great return of Christ to the earth to save and gather His people into this very same Promised Land;

Mat 24:30  And then the sign of the Son of Man shall appear in the heavens. And then all the tribes of the earth shall mourn, and they shall see the Son of Man coming in the clouds of the heaven with power and great glory.

Mat 24:31  And He shall send His angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather His elect from the four winds, from one end of the heavens to the other

Please note that the cloud and the fire are no longer mentioned and the Ark of the Covenant is the only visible presence of God; Christ alone delivers Israel. Note His title;

Jos 3:11  Behold, the ark of the covenant of the Lord of all the earth passes over before you into Jordan.

Please compare this verse in Revelation when the last trumpet sounds:

Rev 11:15  And the seventh angel sounded. And there were great voices in Heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world have become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of His Christ. And He will reign forever and ever.
(For the earlier trumpets see Rev.8:2, 7, 8, 10, 12. 9:1, 13 & 10:7).

Please note that just as Israel passed through the sea as on dry land when they came out of Egypt, so they passed through Jordan on dry land. Ex.14:22, 29, Jos.3:17 and note the third day, Jos.3:2.

When the Priests bearing the Ark stepped into the overflowing river, the fuller and wider waters were held back to Adam (Jos.3:15-16). Friends, the enemy will be raging against Israel in the Day the Lord but will be defeated when His feet stand upon the Mount of Olives. (Zech.14:4, 9). But wait, theres more. As in Adam all die, even so in Christ will all be made alive and this includes Israel (1Cor.15:22). Israels resurrection into the Kingdom is foreshadowed in the lifting of rocks and carrying them across into the inheritance;

Jos 4:1  And it happened when all the people had completely passed over the Jordan, Jehovah spoke to Joshua saying,

Jos 4:2  Take twelve men for you out of the people, a man out of every tribe,

Jos 4:3  and command them saying, Take twelve stones from here, out of the middle of Jordan, out of the place where the priests' feet stood firm. And you shall carry them over with you, and leave them in the place where you shall stay tonight.

The Apostle Paul wrote to the Corinthians about resurrection at the last trumpet; the seventh trumpet in Revelation 11:15. This trumpet they eagerly expected in their lifetime, the we includes Paul;

1Co 15:51  Behold, I speak a mystery to you; we shall not all fall asleep, but we shall all be changed;

1Co 15:52  in a moment, in a glance of an eye, at the last trumpet. For a trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall all be changed.

1Co 15:53  For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.

1Co 15:54  But when this corruptible shall put on incorruption, and when this mortal shall put on immortality, then will take place the word that is written, "Death is swallowed up in victory.

1Co 15:55  O death, where is your sting? O grave, where is your victory?"

1Co 15:56  The sting of death is sin, and the strength of sin is the Law.

1Co 15:57  But thanks be to God who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Dont forget to read Isaiah 25 and Hosea 13. These OT passages have nothing to do with the Church which is His Body. You and I rejoice that, should we fall asleep in Christ, we shall enjoy resurrection but not to the Kingdom of God on the Earth in the Promised Land. Our inheritance is in the heavenly Places.

So far we have seen Trumpets associated with the following;

  1. The glorious entering into Israels inheritance.
  2. The deliverance of Israel by the greater Joshua, Christ Jesus the King of the Jews and the Lord of all the Earth.
  3. The effects of Adam negated and new life in resurrection.

Types and shadows are not nicely packaged in one Scripture passage and next lesson we shall look at other significant elements of the Feast of Trumpets including the fall of Jericho, Jubilee which is the day of Israels national cleansing, the liberation of captives and the restoration of the inheritance.

Lesson 10

TRUMPETS 2. Lev.23. Joshua 3-6.

We are examining features of the Feast of Trumpets. Remember, Trumpets is plural and there were many trumpets in Israels deliverance from Egypt. These past events for Israel look forward to future events for Israel when the Lord will deliver and gather them into their land.

Today we look at some events which happened when Joshua lead Israel into their inheritance. See Ex.15:17 & 34:9.

Joshua had been commanded to enter and take possession, (Josh.1:2). This anticipates the Lord taking His possessions on the earth. We are not surprised to read in Joshua 3:11, 13 a new title of our Lord and Israels King,

Jos 3:11  Behold, the ark of the covenant of the Lord of all the earth passes over before you into Jordan.

You will also find this title in Zech.6:5 which is a very exciting context. Zech.6:12-13 looks to the Lord Christ Jesus as the King Priest who will build the Temple of Israel and reign on His throne there.
Psalm 96 is an interesting passage about Christ in glory as Lord of all the earth.

The Head of the Church which is His body is also the Lord of all the earth and He will rule the earth from Jerusalem. We must not mix up the different titles and offices our Lord has been given. We will not be participate in the earthly part of our Lords Kingdom because our inheritance is in the heavenly places, see Eph.1:3-5, 11.

In our last lesson we noticed that when the Priests bearing the Ark stepped into the flooding Jordan, the fuller and wider waters were held back to Adam (Jos.3:15-16). We saw stones carried across the river typifying resurrection (Josh. 4:2-3). Resurrection for Israel will be fulfilled at the Feasts of Trumpets. The Scriptures tell us that as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive. This happens at the last trumpet. Paul tells us in 1 Cor.15:51-57 that those living at that time will be changed and those asleep in Christ will be made alive. This includes the faithful of Israel and is the beginning of Christs reign on the earth. See 1Cor.15:54 and read the context of Isaiah 25:8, (see also 1Cor.15:55 & Hos.13).

We also realised in our last lesson that the pillars of cloud and the fire ceased when Israel entered their Promised Land. The Ark of the Covenant was the only visible presence of God. In the day when the Feast of Trumpets is fulfilled, Israel will have the personal presence of Christ Himself, no longer the flame of the Shechinah glory, but the Light of the World reigning on the throne of his father David.

Num 14:21  But truly, as I live, all the earth shall be filled with the glory of Jehovah.

Today we look at some new commands given to Joshua after Israel had crossed the river Jordan and were standing in the Promised Land.

Jos 5:2  At that time Jehovah said to Joshua, Make sharp knives for yourselves and circumcise the sons of Israel again, the second time

Joshua 5:4-7 tells us why the children of Israel had to be (re)circumcised. Circumcision was a covenant given by God to Abraham and relates to this land of Canaan;

Gen 17:7  And I will establish My covenant between Me and you and your seed after you in their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be a God to you and to your seed after you.

Gen 17:8  And I will give the land to you in which you are a stranger, and to your seed after you, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession. And I will be their God.
Gen 17:10  This is My covenant, which you shall keep, between Me and you and your seed after you. Every male child among you shall be circumcised.

This second circumcision looks forward to the circumcision of the heart that will take place when the Lord returns to Israel at the last trumpet. Most of the nation of Israel had been uncircumcised in heart and ears down through their history, but when the Lord comes back to the earth, Israel will manifest repentance and a new heart will be given them. See Lev.26:41, Deut.9:6, 10:16 & Acts 7:51. Consider this passage;
Eze 36:24  For I will take you from among the nations and gather you out of all lands, and will gather you into your own land.

Eze 36:25  And I will sprinkle clean waters on you, and you shall be clean. I will cleanse you from all your filthiness and from your idols.

Eze 36:26  And I will give you a new heart, and I will put a new spirit within you. And I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you a heart of flesh.

Eze 36:27  And I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you shall keep My judgments and do them.

Eze 36:28  And you shall dwell in the land that I gave to your fathers. And you shall be My people, and I will be your God.

Eze 36:29  I will also save you from all your defilements, and I will call for the grain, and will increase it, and will lay no famine on you.

When the greater Joshua, the Captain of the Lords Hosts enters His possessions, Israel will be the head and not the tail, a holy people  (separated to serve, Unleavened Bread) and their land a holy land see Joshua 5:15 and Zech.14:20.

After the people were circumcised the Lord makes a statement;

Jos 5:9  And Jehovah said to Joshua, Today I have rolled away the reproach of Egypt from you. Therefore, the name of the place is called Gilgal to this day.

The reproach of Egypt was rolled away that day (Gilgal means rolling, no trace of the site remains). Reproach means scorn, shame, disgrace and taunt. It seems the Egyptians had engaged in ridicule against Israel since they had been wandering in the wilderness for 40 years. Their God was supposed to bring them into their inheritance and He had endured some of this ridicule as well. My dear readers, when the Lord returns in power and majesty Israel will be no longer be a joke and object of blame around the world, and the expletive use of our Saviours name will also cease very suddenly. The trumpet will be loud, and the taunting voices quiet, in that day;
Isa 25:8  He will swallow up death in victory; and the Lord Jehovah will wipe away tears from all faces. And He shall take away from all the earth the rebuke (reproach) of His people. For Jehovah has spoken. 1Cor.15:54

Isa 25:9  And one shall say in that day, Lo, this is our God. We have waited for Him, and He will save us. This is Jehovah; we have waited for Him, we will be glad and rejoice in His salvation.

Isa 54:4  Do not fear; for you shall not be ashamed, nor shall you blush; for you shall not be put to shame; for you shall forget the shame of your youth, and shall not remember the reproach of your widowhood any more.

Isa 54:5  For your Maker is your husband; Jehovah of Hosts is His name; and your Redeemer is the Holy One of Israel; the God of the whole earth shall He be called.

Our Saviour, Christ Jesus, is the Captain of the Lords hosts, and when He returns at the last trumpet then the world will know that He is the Lord of all the earth and the reproach He has borne and His people have born will cease once and for all;

Rev 11:15  And the seventh angel sounded; (the last Trumpet) and there were great voices in heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever. (For the earlier trumpets see Rev.8:2, 7, 8, 10, 12. 9:1, 13 & 10:7).

Israels Feasts were divided into two parts. Passover, Unleavened Bread and Weeks are the Exodus or way out Feasts. Trumpets, Atonement and Tabernacles/Booths are the Eisodus or way in Feasts. Trumpets are the beginning of glory for Israel. So far we have seen events associated with the Feast of Trumpets anticipating the following;

  1. The glorious entering into Israels inheritance.
  2. The deliverance of Israel by the greater Joshua, Christ Jesus the King of the Jews and the Lord of all the Earth.
  3. The effects of Adam negated and new life in resurrection.
  4. Israel receives a new heart.
  5. The reproach of Israel and her Redeemer removed.
  6. Christ dwelling with them.

Israel is approaching Jericho but one last thing needs to be done before they enter their spiritual warfare; they observe Passover and the manna ceases. Then they are ready for the first stronghold of the enemy and next lesson we will look at the Sword the 7 priests, 7 rams horn trumpets, 7 days and 7 circuits on the 7th day. Seven is the number of spiritual perfection and Israels prophetic number.
